12 Lessons on the Design and Function of the Hand and Forearm from Alexander Yanai (AY) curated by Candy Conino.
From the early 1950s to the late 1970s, Dr. Feldenkrais taught eight weekly public Awareness Through Movement® lessons in Tel Aviv. The street where these lessons took place was called Alexander Yanai, and thus the collection has taken on this name. Dr. Feldenkrais taught in Hebrew and recorded his lessons on reel-to-reel tapes. Over 25 years, he recorded close to 600 different lessons. His practice was to deliver a lesson, record it and then replay it to the following group and observe their process. He would then re-teach the lesson with minor changes until he was happy with the final recorded version. The Alexander Yanai lessons are transcriptions of Dr. Feldenkrais’ recordings.
The Estate of Dr. Feldenkrais stipulated that the lessons be available in sequence as close to how Dr. Feldenkrais taught them as possible. The 550 lessons are available for purchase individually (pdf), in volumes of 50 lessons each (printed or pdf), and in thematic collections (pdf). Enjoy a 10% discount, when you purchase the full set of Volumes 1-11 (Lessons 001-550) or sign up for the Alexander Yanai Subscription. A useful searchable PDF of the Lesson Index helps you locate just the right lesson.
Making the materials available to the community has been a monumental task. It involved many levels of cooperation and the commitment of many people over extended periods of time. The first volume of 50 lessons became available in English starting in 1994, and the final English volume, in 2004. German transcripts are available from the Feldenkrais-Verband Deutschland e.V., Italian transcripts are available from the Associazione Italiana Insegnanti Metodo Feldenkrais (AIIMF). A growing collection of Spanish and French translations are also available.
